How to take care of your car when it's less used?

How to take care of your car when it's less used?

Many of the measures introduced in connection with the COVID-19 epidemic have greatly changed our daily lives and our transport habits.

Commuting to our workplaces has been largely replaced by working from home, in home offices. The vehicles we use are at best very rarely or not driven at all, thus standing in one place can lead to the following problems:

1.) Battery

  • a battery in good condition during a permanent stand - contrary to general knowledge - will loose its battery power rather under permanently high temperature than under permanently low temperature
  • some vehicles have electronic units that communicate with our smart devices through applications even when the car is at rest
  • if the vehicle is equipped with GPS, martel alarm or other retrofit device connected to the vehicle's electrical network, its battery is definitely exposed to be submerged and breakdown

2.) Tire

  • it is rare, yet the possibility of tire deformation should be mentioned
  • if the correct tire pressure is kept, this is less likely to occur

3.) Brake

  • corrosion will already appear on the brake discs after 2-3 days of standing
  • by default, this is not a problem, however, it largely depends on the length of the permanent stand
  • it is important that if surface rust appears on the brake disc, the first 100-200 meters should be driven more carefully

4.) Car body

  • bird droppings on the body of the car may corrode the polish. If you have the opportunity to do so, please remove it

If you can, we recommend starting the car once a week and taking a short 4-5 km lap. If short-distance driving is not possible, run the car engine while standing for 5 minutes will also help you avoid problems occur during permanent stand. Please also turn the air conditioner on.

Periodic service:

Regardless of whether the car is not in use or only used occasionally, the date for the mandatory annual inspection may occur, failure to do so will void the vehicle's warranty. Customers having maintenance services will soon be informed about the upcoming required mandatory revisions.

Body repair:

We would like to kindly ask you to let us know if you have any vehicle that have been damaged in the past, and have already filed the damage or even had damage survey, but the car has not yet been repaired. Our currently operating repair partners will pick up the vehicle at your location, then return it back after repairing it.

Validity of MOT:

Due to the validity of the MOT, please pay special attention to the interpretation of the government decree cited below.

Of Government Decree (hereinafter: Government Decree 81/2020) 6.§ (1) paragraph contains a provision as follows: “During an emergency situation, the expiring official documents of Hungarian citizens in force in the territory of Hungary valid for 15 days after its expiry. "

  1. The registration certificate of the motor vehicle is governed by Decree 81/2020. Government Decree § 6 (1), ie expiring documents are valid for 15 days after the end of the emergency.
  2. A 81/2020. The cited provision of the Government Decree applies only to Hungarian citizens, not to vehicles owned by legal entities.
  3. The rules for participation in road transport, traffic, its control and the rules on the legal consequences revealed have not changed.
